Debby the Lobster Queen, Sport Season 2004!

Debby, first day of 2004 Sport Season

Congratulations to Lisa Wright on her FIRST SAILFISH!

Lisa is excited and telling everyone about catching her first Sailfish!  On January 17, 2004, she went out of Key Biscayne on a charter with WHYknot Charter (29' See Vee, Miami), Captain Juan Estevez (shown above with Lisa).  They were just off Fowey Rocks at around 1 PM, using live pilchards on two kites with two lines each.  She writes: "I was adjusting the placement of the bait when I saw the strike.  I grabbed the rod and started reeling.  The most beautiful sight was when he sprang from the water and we knew we had a sail on.  He ran to the bow of the boat and I gave chase.  While I was fighting my fish on the bow another hit at the stern.  We had two sails on.  My fish took all but about 50 - 75 yards out of 550 yards of line from the reel.  We fought for about 30 - 40 minutes to get him to the boat.  In the meantime they had gotten the second sail to the boat only to have him throw the hook before bringing him inside.  As a side thrill we caught a King Mackerel while clearing the lines to fight the sails.  What a day!  I addition to the fish mentioned above we brought in 3 Dolphin, 2 Mutton Snapper and one Yellowtail.  I would recommend Whyknot Charter to anyone wanting to have a good time, with a captain that is more than willing to teach you anything you want to know about fishing."  Way to go, Lisa! Ladies, we always need to practice our knot tying!  Here's an interactive website that will show you how it's done!  Click on the still photo of each knot to get the moving picture.  By the way, this one is a Duncan Loop Knot.

Fishing Fatales

~ By Nery Ynclan, Miami Herald

Nery Ynclan at LLGF Seminar in Islamorada, October 2002The invitation read: ''Ladies, let's go fishing.'' It sounded like a dating service (we'll get back to that later), but it really was about fishing, as in hooks, reels and bait with eyes.

When I heard the two-day seminar would be set in idyllic Islamorada, I figured the worst that could happen might be that I'd have to actually touch a fish. But from the moment I walked into the classroom, it was as clear as bottled water -- these women were serious anglers. (Story continued on Miami Herald website)

Surf Fishing Adventure!

~ By Stephanie Swerdlin Hempel

For those who missed our Surf Fishing Adventure Friday night, July 19, here’s the sandy story: We’re changing Mrs. Morton’s name to Cuda Anne!  She was THE fishergal of  the night with two barracuda!  Sue Fejes nearly caught a swimmer. I must have been trying to catch a convertible on A1A on my first cast!

Debby Auchter is  busy with the Spiegel Grove and lobster mini-season, but she did bring her husband’s own home brewed beer (with a very creative label) and joined us to enjoy the beautiful evening. Sue Fry had a great fish finder-rig, ask her to diagram it for you.  Tania Ledon and her guest made it up from Miami, and Connie Tuttle-Priest drove quite a distance to join us.  Connie, we’ll miss you in August, but it’s for a lilting cause...

MANY MANY THANKS to Lanny Dixon for her effort putting this fun adventure together and slicing the squid.

PS ask us about the Key Largo Adventure in September!

Photos of the surf fishing adventure appear on the next page...click "next" at the bottom of this page.
